Saint John , the son of Zebedee, and thebrother of Saint James the Great, was calledto be an Apostle by our Lord. He was the onlyone of the Twelve who did not forsakethe Savior in the hour of His Passion. Saint John stood faithfully at the cross whenJesus made him the guardian of His Mother.During the era of the new Church, he preachedin Jerusalem and at Ephesus. He was, with theother apostles, taken prisoner and scourgedby the Jews, and in the year 95, under theEmperor Domitian, was thrown into a vesselof boiling oil. Having endured this torturewithout burns or injury, he was then banishedto the island of Patmos for a year. He died at Ephesus in 101 and is creditedwith the authorship of three epistles,one Gospel, and the Book of Revelation. Saint John is recognized today as the patronof those suffering from burns.His feast day is December 27th. Saint John the Apostle, Pray for Us.
